Oak Wilt, a deadly vascular disease that attacks all species of oak trees, has been spotted in Hudson since 2019. To prevent the spread of Oak Wilt, oak trees should not be pruned during the summer months. Beginning November 1 through March 31, it is now safe to maintenance prune those Oak trees so as not to spread the disease.
Oak Wilt begins with wilting and browning in the upper tree canopy usually in mid-to late summer. The disease can be spread over land by beetles that pick up fungal spores and carry them to healthy trees that have been recently pruned. It also can spread underground between neighboring trees through root grafts.
Trees also can be treated with preventative applications of a systemic fungicide which should be administered by an experienced, professional tree service.
