Hudson Water Customers Will See Rate Increase in This Month’s Bill
In this month’s billing, Hudson Water customers will see the water rate increase approved by City Council in December of last year. Hudson water rates have not been increased in nearly 10 years.
An increase was necessary to continue to operate and maintain the water system and fund Capital improvements to ensure an adequate and safe water system for customers. The goal also was to create one blended rate for all Hudson Water customers. Currently, there are different rates for the former Village and former Township based on the merger in the 1990s. Prior to the rate change, residents in the former Township paid an average of $62.52/month, while those in the former Village paid an average of $40.01/month.
With the new blended rate, former Village customers will pay approximately $6 per month more, while the cost to former Township customers will decrease by approximately $15 per month in 2023. Rates then will increase approximately $3 per month per year in years 2024-2027. In year 2028 and beyond, the increase is anticipated to be lower.
The rate change:
• Adopts a blended rate with a single rate schedule for all Hudson Water customers with annual increases, which would impact customers as stated above.
• Reviews rates every three years at a minimum and verify that the rates are appropriate.
• Increases the Availability/Standby Charge from $3.50 to $5.00 per month.
• Increases the Water System Investment Fee for new customers to tap into the system from $750 to $1,000 per Equivalent Residential User (ERU).
The impact on the typical residential bill with the new blended rate for all customers is illustrated below. This chart is based on the average customer consuming 800 cf of water per month. The Chart A shows the monthly cost including all three components, 1) minimum charge, 2) commodity charge, and 3) capital fee as proposed.
