Pack the Pond on August 2

Pack the Pond 2016

Pack the Pond is back! The Friends of Hudson Parks are joining forces with the Kent State University Recreation Department to sponsor the Pack the Pond celebration at Hudson Springs Park. The entire community is invited to this family-friendly, end-of-summer event on Monday, August 2 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Participants will be able to try out kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards for free. Other activities for the entire family include a cookout, geocaching demonstrations and more. For a complete schedule, see below.

Preregistration is not necessary for this event, however if you wish to reserve a time slot in advance for a kayak, paddleboard or canoe, please visit for more information.

One highlight will be the annual “Pack the Pond Challenge.” The goal is to get as many watercraft as possible onto the lake at the same time for a group photo. Individuals with boats at Hudson Springs are encouraged to participate. Community members also are welcome to bring boats to the event. Boats must be registered with the State of Ohio and participants must have life vests.

Kent State will have kayaks, paddleboards and canoes available and also will provide instruction in using a stand-up paddleboard. One lucky participant will win a kayak raffled by the Friends of Hudson Parks. Raffle tickets will be available for $5 each with the drawing to be held at 7:30 p.m. at the May Pavilion.

Local geocaching experts, the “Muddy Dawgs,” will be available to answer questions about geocaching throughout the evening. They also will feature information about the current Geocaching Adventure sponsored by the Friends.

The Friends of Hudson Parks will provide free food and drinks for attendees. Interested community members will have the opportunity to learn more about the new Park Ambassador program and membership in the Friends organization.

In the event of extreme weather, the rain date is Thursday, August 5.
