Council Workshop Highlights from May 11, 2021

Council Highlights

HUDSON, OH (May 12, 2021) – Following is a summary of the Tuesday, May 11 City Council Workshop. To watch the full meeting, visit www.hudson.oh.us/WatchMeetings

Correspondence, Council Comments, City Manager Comments

  • Professor Doug Goldsmith. Council recognized Hudson resident, Professor Doug Goldsmith, as a recipient of one of Kent State University’s highest honors, the Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA), for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • Park Board and Tree Commission Openings. Applications for the openings on the Park Board and Tree Commission are due by 4:30 p.m. on May 20.
  • Mayor Shubert’s Wife. The Mayor gave an update on his wife’s condition as she battles cancer. On Thursday, she had brain surgery and is now at home and doing well, although she has a long battle ahead of her.

Discussion Items

  • Snow and Ice Control on City Sidewalks and Trails. At the request of City Council, City staff presented information on the cost of plowing and salting sidewalks at the Barlow Community Center and Pond, as well as information/costs for other trails that could be considered. Currently, the City does not plow or salt hike or bike trails in the parks. After a discussion, Council directed staff to look at adding only Barlow Community Center and Pond to the ice and snow control contract. City staff will come back to Council with parameters clarifying what sidewalks will be maintained. After the snow season, it will be reviewed to determine if the City should continue this service and if other paved trails in the parks should be added.
  • American Rescue Plan. The City Manager told Council that the City has received guidelines from the Federal Government regarding how the American Rescue Plan dollars may be spent by municipalities. The item will be the next Council Meeting agenda for discussion.

Discussion on the Next Council Meeting Agenda

  • Railroad Quiet Zones.  Legislation to create railroad quiet zones at two locations (Stow Road and Hines Hill Road) is on the consent agenda for next week. Council asked that the private driveway that that crosses the existing railroad track just west of Stone Road on Ravenna Street be added to the list.
  • Hudson Players Sign.  Hudson Players has said that their sign was grandfathered in for the previous sign code and would like to be grandfathered in if the new sign code changes.  Staff will investigate this and get back to Council.
  • Charter Change Amendment. Council asked for clarification on wording in the Charter change amendment regarding the “5 to 7” electors and “Council shall appoint.” Staff will get back to Council with clarification.
