With the holidays ahead, some City of Hudson staff members were looking for a new way to give back to the community, to have some fun working collaboratively, and to make the event "hands on." Of course, it had to be safe for everyone too. The idea of a Toy Drive to support Akron Children's Hospital surfaced and the group was off! The program was led by staff members and the community was invited to participate too. Due to COVID-19, Akron Children's Hospital had no space to store toys as they had in the past. Also due to COVID-19, they could not collect toys as they had previously. The City of Hudson was able to offer use of the community rooms for storage and the Toy Drive quickly solved the need for lots of great toys, books, and loveable stuffed animals.
The Toy Drive was promoted to all departments and the City Manager offered the perk of pizza to the department that collected the most toys. The drive was held outside City Hall in early November with a safe, quick drop off process for donors to utilize. Kudos to the Safety Department (Police and Fire Staff) who generously shared 700 toys! An impressive 97% of staff members shared wonderful toys and gifts. In total well over 1000 toys were donated and are ready to be shared with Akron Children's Hospital for children who are in the hospital during the holidays. So many stuffed animals were donated that every child in the hospital will be able to choose a new "friend" during their hospital stay for the next year! Plans are already underway to make this an annual event.
