With the General Election coming up on November 3, political signs are popping up throughout the City. Hudson welcomes political signs, but they must be placed on private property (with the permission of the property owner) and not in the public right-of-way. Signs also cannot be placed on City-owned property, including public facilities, public greens or Hudson parks.
The public right-of-way is the area closest to the street curb, sometimes known as the tree lawn. While the length of the public right-of-way varies by street, in general, signs should be placed at least 15 feet from the edge of the roadway pavement to ensure they are not in the right-of-way.
There is a limit regarding how much square feet can be taken up by signs at any one time. The limit varies based on the District in which you live. Our Temporary Sign Application information page explains the limits in your District. (Note: You are NOT required to fill out the Temporary Sign Application for election/political signs. It is provided only as a reference for the total number of square feet permitted in each district.)
If your sign is placed in the right-of-way, it will be moved back onto the homeowner’s private property or removed. Call Hudson’s Community Development office at (330) 342-1790 with questions about rules regulating placement of signs.
