This is the first of ongoing updates for citizens providing with highlights from City Council Meetings and Workshops.
At tonight’s Council meeting, City staff presented an overview of a SWOT analysis for all City departments, which included strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing City government. This analysis was prepared for Council as a reference when it holds its strategic planning session later this month.
- City strengths included customer service, staff knowledge, budget management, safety, reliable service and use of technology.
- Weaknesses included aging facilities and equipment, communication, customer service, succession planning, and lack of staffing in some areas.
- Opportunities are training, social media, communications, technology, LEAN program, and better use of data.
- Threats identified were aging infrastructure, funding cuts from State and Federal, succession planning, government regulations and lack of public trust in government.
Council was encouraged to reach out to staff for more information on any individual departments identified in the larger plan.
Council passed the following items on the consent agenda:
- Design for the Barlow Community Center Dam Improvements Project.
- Bids for the 2020 Storm Sewer Lining Improvements Project.
- Bids for Pedestrian Signals at College and Hudson Streets crosswalks.
- Bids for the SR 91 North Turn Lane Improvements.
- Ability to apply for a State Fire Marshall’s Fire Department Training Grant.
- Change order for the M.A.T Cleaning contract to accommodate the increased needs generated by the larger space in the new city hall.
Residents from Nicholson Drive attended the meeting and spoke during the public comments section against the planned design of Veterans Trail Phase 3. City Council discussed legislation to cancel the contract with the selected contractor and return any funding received from the Ohio Department of Transportation for the project. It passed unanimously.
Council suspended and passed legislation authorizing an additional $1,150,000 be put into the accelerated road program for 2020. Originally, Council had planned to borrow that money to increase the amount spent on roads and more quickly improve overall road conditions throughout the City. With an increase in income tax revenue generated in 2019 largely from new businesses and new jobs that came to the City, the City has the money to fund the program without borrowing.
Mayor Shubert also issued a proclamation, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the United States League of Women Voters on February 14, 2020 and a proclamation establishing the week of February 16-22 as Random Acts of Kindness Week in Hudson.
