A colorful rain barrel painted by local artists from Hudson High School will be raffled off at Green on the Green Saturday, September 22 at noon. Raffle tickets are $1 and are available for advance purchase at the Public Works Department, 1769 Georgetown Road, and at Destination Hudson. The City would like to thank the Hudson City Schools for the artwork and Hudson Collision Center for their support of this program.
Rain barrels not only conserve water, but also help filter out pollutants and prevent erosion and flooding. The use of a rain barrel can also generate savings on water and sewer bills and may result in credits toward storm water fees.
In Summit County, where the average rainfall amounts to around 37 inches, a one-inch rainfall draining off a 1000-square-foot roof will generate about 562 gallons of water. The water collected in the rain barrel can be used for lawn and garden watering, which makes up nearly 40% of total household water use in the summer season.
