Hudson was named a 2016 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. This is the 36th consecutive year Hudson has received this honor. Hudson is one of more than 3,400 Tree City USAs, with a combined population of 140 million.
The community also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care.
Hudson achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
This recognition was made possible largely due to the efforts of City Arborist Tom Munn and the City of Hudson Tree Commission.
Hudson’s urban forest includes more than 14,000 trees in the public right of way, with thousands more in parks, green spaces, and private lots. Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants, and provide wildlife habitat, among other benefits.
