Project Update 3/9/2020Tree cutting has been completed along the project corridor and removal of logs will take place later this week. During the log removal work, two way traffic will be maintained.
Tree clearing has commenced on the project and is anticipated to last approximately two weeks, weather permitting. The tree removal is taking place ahead of the roadway work in order to meet the project’s environmental requirements. During the tree removal work, two way traffic will be maintained.

Right-of-way acquisition is anticipated to be completed by late January, 2020. The next step for the project is for utility companies to begin moving infrastructure (pipes, poles, etc.) that may be in conflict with the roadway improvements. In addition, trees scheduled for removal within the project limits must be removed by March 15th to meet the project’s environmental permitting requirements. The utility relocation work and tree clearing work is scheduled for spring, 2020.
major roadway project includes the addition of left turn lanes at Valley View Road, Herrick Park Drive & Hines Hill Road, resurfacing of SR 91 from Brandywine Drive to Middleton Road, the installation of an eight-foot sidewalk on the east side of the road from Brandywine Drive to Middleton Road, and bike lanes on both sides of the road from Brandywine Drive to Middleton Road, crosswalk enhancements, storm system improvements and lighting upgrades. In addition, the City of Akron is participating in the project with the construction of a new 16” water main between Herrick Park Drive and Middleton Road.
The project is scheduled to bid in April, 2020 and begin construction in early summer. The project construction is anticipated to last two construction seasons and finish in the summer, 2021. The contractor will be required to maintain two-way traffic along SR 91 at all times during construction, but delays can be expected.

Right-of-way acquisition is on-going and anticipated to be completed later this year. After the right-of-way acquisition process is complete, affected utility infrastructure such as telephone poles, underground gas lines, etc. will be moved in preparation of the full improvement project construction. At this time, the roadway project is expected to begin construction in late 2019 and continue through 2020.

The SR 91 North Turn Lane Improvements project design includes the addition of left turn lanes at Valley View Road, Herrick Park Drive & Hines Hill Road, the elimination of the heaving shoulders along both sides of the roadway, improved drainage systems, improved intersection lighting, the installation of an 8-foot sidewalk and curb on the east side of the road, 5-foot bike lanes on both sides of the road and resurfacing of SR 91 from Brandywine Drive to Middleton Road.
Purpose and Need
The purpose of this project is to improve safety, reduce congestion, provide better pedestrian and bicycle mobility, and improve drainage and long-term pavement conditions on SR 91 (Darrow Road) between Brandywine and Middleton Road.
In 2016, the City and MS Consultants (design firm), finalized a feasibility study which evaluated potential widening alternatives for the project. The City held a public meeting in April, 2016 to collect comments on the preliminary design. The City’s consultant then began the final design of the project in 2017-2018 and the City held a second public meeting in February, 2018 After collecting additional public comments, the plans were finalized in late 2018. Right-of-way acquisition for the project commenced in early 2019 and is on-going. The roadway project is expected to begin construction in late 2019 and continue through 2020.
