Smoke Detectors


  • Recommend one on every floor, prefer one in every bedroom
  • Maximum life is ten years
  • Check operation monthly, change batteries annually, (unless ten year battery)
  • Prefer photo-electric type or duel type
  • Average cost is $10 to $40

Carbon Monoxide Detectors


  • Recommend at least one per residence
  • Best located in or near the adult bedroom
  • Second best location is near the furnace/hot water heater
  • Recommend plug in the wall with battery back-up
  • Average cost is $20 to $60

Fire Extinguisher


  • Recommend two for the average size home
  • Best located in the garage and central in the house, visible and easily accessible
  • ABC type works well for all typical fires
  • Typical residential size is 2.5 or 5 pound
  • Maximum life 3 to 12 years. Look for expiration date
  • Average cost is $20 to $100

Knox Box


  • Key safe that is located outside your residence and holds the key to your front door
  • Accessible only by Hudson Fire or EMS in case of emergency
  • Important if you are unable to open the door due to an emergency
  • Typically located on the primary entrance door
  • Average cost is $225 to $250
