“A Call to Action”
The announcement that Actors’ Summit Theater (AST) will be relocating to Downtown Akron for its 2010/2011 season is received with mixed feelings. I deeply regret the loss of Actors Summit Theater in our community. The theater has been a wonderful asset to the vibrancy and vitality of Hudson. For the past nine years Hudson has been blessed by the benefit of Actors’ Summit Theater. Its outstanding theatrical performances have brought many visitors to Hudson through those many years. Not only has the Theater been a valuable member of the business community for those nine years, there are many dedicated citizens who have supported and assisted Actors’ Summit Theater while they have been here. Just two years ago, June of 2008, Hudson City Council unanimously passed Resolution Number 08-83, in support of Actors’ Summit Theater. Following is an excerpt from that resolution:
“Whereas, Actors’ Summit Theater is a valuable asset to Hudson’s uniqueness and adds immensely to the vibrancy of Hudson’s downtown and the general quality of life in Hudson through its presentation of performing arts.
NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Resolved the Council of the City of Hudson, Ohio, on behalf of itself and the residents of the City, does hereby commend all involved with the promotion and preservation of Actors’ Summit Theater and encourage all interested parties to work together for its continuance within the downtown of the City of Hudson.”
It has been known for some time that Actors’ Summit Theater would eventually have to move from their current warehouse location on Owen Brown Street. The Board of Trustees has been diligently looking for acceptable space in Hudson, but has been unsuccessful as now time has run out. In order to have a 2010/2011 performance season Actors’ Summit Theater will re-locating to the City of Akron (let’s hope only temporarily). The City of Akron recognizes both the cultural and economic contribution made by a performing arts theater and has generously offered over 16,000 sq. ft. of space, plus free indoor parking in downtown Akron at the Greystone Hall. The City of Akron has not “lured” Actors’ Summit Theater away from Hudson, Akron was professionally approached, as time was running out to plan for the next season, and they kindly responded so a season wasn’t missed. Thank you Akron! While we are disappointed to see them go, we should by all means understand their reasons for relocating to Akron and we should wish them continued success in their new home.
Actors’ Summit Theater’s departure illustrates the need for the creation of a arts, festival, & events committee that can work to coordinate the efforts of all the arts, festivals, & events in our community and can assist working through situations such as this. Right now, we have many wonderful events, all of whom work independently and do a fantastic job bringing visitors, as well as our local citizens, in to our City each year. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have an arts, festivals, & events organization, like what is being proposed with the “Destination Hudson” concept, that would coordinate all of these individual efforts to enhance Hudson’s reputation as a destination City where one can enjoy great music, art exhibits, theater performances, a multitude of festivals and other events all year long. The call to action for me, and hopefully all in Hudson, is to support the development of a permanent arts, festival, & events committee now!
