Walk/Bike to School on May 10

For the seventh year in a row, Hudson City Schools will be joining schools from across the country to celebrate National Bike/Walk to School Day on Wednesday, May 10. Safe Routes Hudson encourages students who live 1 to 2 miles from school and have a safe path to participate. Not only does biking to work or school promote healthy habits among children and adults but it also helps the environment, decreases traffic congestion, leads to safer streets and creates a sense of community.

Parents and students living in the “Walk Zone” can pre-plan which route to take with the Safe Routes Hudson map. Helmets, reflective clothing and cautious walking and riding are encouraged.

There will be parent volunteers and an increased police presence in the neighborhoods surrounding Hudson Schools. Participants will receive water bottles and Clif Bars and have a chance to enter for raffle prizes. Say hi to the Hudson Police Officers while you’re on your way! Be safe by following these bike safety tips:

Bike Safety Tips:

  • Wear a properly fitted bike helmet. Use helmets labeled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
  • Before riding, test brakes and tire pressure and adjust seat and handlebar height.
  • Follow "Rules of the Road." Ride on the right, in the same direction as other motorists.
  • Obey all traffic signs, signals and lane markings. Children under age 10 are safer riding on the sidewalk.
  • Look left, then right, then left again. Stop and look both ways before entering a street or crossing an intersection.
  • At busy intersections, walk your bike across the street, following traffic signals.
  • Don't ride at dusk or in the dark.
  • Get noticed. Wear bright colors; attach reflectors to your bike.
  • Always ride with a friend so you can get help in case of an emergency.
  • Prevent theft. When not riding, lock your bike to an immovable object.
